It’s important that consultants think of themselves as a business owner rather than just a “consultant.” In order for these business owners to be successful in their consulting practices, they must create a special and distinguishable brand for themselves. Consultants who have moved from the public sector towards the private sector may have difficulty or feel uncomfortable selling themselves and their services. In order to broaden a network of clients, you must make it known that you are available for consulting. Talking to colleagues and updating a LinkedIn. profile may help to spread word about your business, but you need to brand yourself so people can understand and recognize the skills you offer. Successful branding can greatly increase business brought to consultants, so it’s crucial that time is dedicated towards a brand development. The brand consultants construct does not necessarily have to be a visual, but it can also be the mission you hold or your communicated theme. For consultants, establishing a brand may seem intimidating or difficult, but it very useful without all the cost.    

 A good way to create a brand is to develop a company name for yourself. You can use your own name, just make sure you can develop a significant design, logo, or style around your brand so it can be conveyed throughout your website, proposals, business cards, etc. Finding an appealing color or graphic design to associate with your brand will help you to stand out. Some businesses or people are hesitant to hire consultants solely by their name even though they will be the individual to show up and evaluate the project at hand. If this is one of your concerns, pick a company name you are confident in and make sure it is unique and original. Be careful to update emails and LinkedIn. profiles with your brand name, so your network remains updated. Lastly, establish a brand story where you can share your knowledge, experience, values, and communicated mission. This will allow you to reach your target population, expand your brand, and show off your credibility.

 Building a professional brand for yourself will help your current clients understand the value your service brings or adds. It also helps to form a great first impression while staying connected and being recognized for your work. When new projects are presented, your memorable brand will have clients thinking and looking towards you.
