So I often get asked by my coaching clients, “How do I lead, when I’m not in charge?”

Leading a team, others, or even a company isn’t just about titles—it’s about influence and impact. Here’s how you can lead effectively, even if you’re not in charge.

What’s in a Title Anyway?

Leading others goes beyond having an important title. It’s about understanding how things get done and who influences those decisions. Look for the movers and shakers in your team or organization—those whose opinions hold respect and sway. Connect with them, collaborate, and align your goals with theirs. Building these relationships can help you get things done even without a formal leadership role.

Walk the Talk

We have all heard that adage, “Talk the talk, but walk the walk.”

Being a leader means practicing what you preach. People respect those who are consistent and true to their values. When faced with tough decisions or challenges, show integrity, and stick to your principles. By leading by example, you inspire trust and set a standard that others will follow.

Set a Good Example

Leadership isn’t just about giving orders—it’s about showing others how it’s done. Model the behaviors you want to see in your team—like problem-solving, resilience, and a commitment to growth. Encourage accountability and a culture where everyone takes ownership of their actions and learns from mistakes.

Build Strong Alliances

Successful leaders know the value of collaboration. Work across teams and departments to build alliances based on shared goals. Clearly communicate your ideas and how they benefit the organization. By gaining support from diverse stakeholders, you create a network of allies who can help champion your initiatives.

Master Communication

Two out of three of my keynote speaking engagements revolve around this topic! Effective leaders are great communicators. Hone your communication skills—be clear, listen actively, and adapt your style to different audiences. Seek feedback to ensure your messages are understood and aligned. Clear, confident communication builds trust and gets people on board with your vision.

Adapt to Change

You are probably tired of me including this in almost every article, but many of us fail to recognize its importance! Flexibility is key in any industry; at any given time, things can change rapidly. Leaders must be agile—anticipating changes, embracing innovation, and guiding their teams through uncertainty. Foster a culture of adaptability where everyone is open to new ideas and ready to pivot when needed. Lead by example, showing resilience and a positive attitude towards change.

So leading is NOT just about who reports to you, or what your business card title is; it’s about making a difference and inspiring others to do the same. By focusing on building relationships, practicing integrity, setting a good example, collaborating effectively, communicating clearly, and embracing change, you can lead effectively regardless of your formal role. Cultivate a leadership style that fosters trust, teamwork, and continuous growth—for yourself and your organization.
