The consulting industry has been split into two main types of consulting services: low cost consulting and high value consulting. In the past, the consulting industry offered value to clients through extensive analysis and data gathering. Although this is still true, many companies have determined they can do research analysis and gather their own data, without having to spend money outside of the company.
In low cost consulting, clients think they understand and know what the problem is, they just need someone to verify and actually perform solutions. With the understanding of what needs to be done, they then hire a consultant at a low cost to implement the changes.
High value consulting is where clients are not sure about what their organizational problems are and seek out experts to come up with solutions and options to solve these problems. This type of consulting requires a high amount of creativity, a macro approach, and an ability to make informed decisions for complex issues.
